Ironworkers Local 8 COVID-19 Update

IW 8 Office - Monday, March 16, 2020

From the FST/Business Manager of Ironworkers Local 8

I’d like to take a brief minute to discuss concerns related to the COVID-19 outbreak and our workplace operations. At this time, Ironworkers Local 8 will remain open daily to serve our members. Members are encouraged to continue to go to work unless directed by your employer to do otherwise.

However, it is important to practice and take general health care precautions during this pandemic. Please make sure to observe the following practices during the workday.

  • If you are sick, COVID-19 or otherwise, stay home.
  • Seek medical treatment, preferably by using Anthems Live Health Online to avoid Doctors office visits.
  • Wash your hands frequently or use hand sanitizer if available.
  • Don’t touch your face.
  • Don’t shake hands.
  • Cover your mouth with the inside of your elbow or tissue if you cough or sneeze.

Outside of the workday I would advise continuing these precautions and avoid large groups of people.

The Officers of Ironworkers Local 8 are concerned over everyone’s wellbeing. Under direction from the International Association and Government recommendations, the March Union & Informational Meeting is officially cancelled. Officer meetings will still take place on regular days and times. Further meeting cancellations will be posted if needed.

The Federal Government is currently deliberating a Bill known as the Families First Coronavirus Response Act. This Act discusses test kits, treatment and paid leave for families and individuals exposed to COVID-19. Once this Bill has been acted on, The Board of Trustees will meet to discuss changes to the Health & Welfare fund to ensure Ironworkers and their families are properly covered. Updates to the Plan will be shared with our members as information becomes available.

By not panicking and following safe health practices, I am confident we can avoid spreading this illness. Thank you, have a safe and productive day.
